In law school -- where he began honing his trial skills -- he received the Arthur L. Robbins award for trial advocacy. These skills are mandatory for a family-law attorney involved with complex divorce cases among individuals of considerable wealth. These difficult cases can and do proceed to trial before a judge.
David W. Potts, J.D. has served as vice president and general counsel for the Detroit Lions of the National Football League. This experience taught him to fashion creative and strategic approaches to the practice of law. Namely, it has given him the ability to ameliorate legal disputes concerning significant financial assets from the point of view of a business executive and general counsel, offering solutions that other attorneys may not think about.
He also was involved in the negotiations with the Pontiac Stadium Authority on issues ranging from leases, interpreting agreements, and construction of the new Detroit Lions' facilities.
David W. Potts, J.D. joined the prestigious law firm of Butzel Long in 1999. He is a member of the Oakland County Bar Association and served as vice chairperson, the In-House Counsel Committee, and was past-chair of the Public Relations Committee. He attended Hillsdale College, Eastern Michigan University and obtained his law degree from Wayne State University Law School.
David is a Master of the Oakland County Bar Association's Inn of Court, which further emphasizes his commitment to trial advocacy and the skill and determination needed to prepare a case to go to trial if necessary to secure the best outcome possible.
David Potts is tireless in his dedication to the community where he resides and conducts business. First and foremost, he represents the people of Oakland County by serving as the 20th district County Commissioner. He is a past board member of the Oakland County Legal Aid Society, and is an American Heart Association consultant because of prior services to the AHA.
He is a Past Chairman, Board Member and Executive Committee member of the American Heart Association of Metropolitan Detroit. David also serves as a Director of the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan and The Community House in Birmingham, Michigan. He was a Council Member of the President's Council on White House Fellows and is co-host of the popular television show Eye on Oakland.
David enjoys spending time with his family and his grandson, Ryan. His wife is the Honorable Wendy Potts, an Oakland County Circuit Court judge.
